The very-well known University of Colorado football coach, Deion Sanders, aka Coach Prime, made the phrase “We comin’” famous last fall once he took over the Buffaloes, and third-year Caruthersville High School football coach Dom Guglielmo has every right to preach the same mantra, as his program is certainly on the upswing following last fall’s seven-wins, which were the most since 2019.

“We’ve got a really good skill group,” Guglielmo said recently of his 2024 squad, “and we have four out of five returning up front (on the offensive line).

“We’re very fortunate.”

The Tigers had 35 non-seniors on their roster last fall, one of which was then-freshman Tre’sean Mays, who, despite his youth, will make an impact this fall.

“Tre’sean is a beast,” Guglielmo said. “He’s a hard-working kid. He’s a good kid.

“The sky is the limit for him.”

Mays has strength and athleticism going in his favor, but more importantly, he has an inner drive to succeed.

The Caruthersville football program has two strength-training sessions each day and Mays “comes to both lifts every single day,” according to his coach.

“He has the highest power-clean on the team, as a 15-year-old,” Guglielmo said. “The kid is a beast. He comes to practice every single day.”

The Caruthersville squad took part recently in a Combine at Dexter High School, and Mays was frustrated with Guglielmo for “pulling him out” of the timed shuttle run due to his having a rolled ankle from an earlier workout.

Mays is one of several very talented athletes within the Tiger offensive backfield. He will share carries with returning senior Jermonte Alexander, junior Sammy Bryant, and sophomore Josiah Lockridge.

“Tre’sean is that auxiliary guy right now who can play tailback or fullback,” Guglielmo said.

Defensively, Mays can be utilized somewhere in the heart of the Tiger defense at one of the linebacker positions.

“He’s fast,” Guglielmo concluded.”
