Cape Girardeau police officers responded to an alleged bank robbery Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Southern Bank.

Richard Bann, 72, of Springfield allegedly entered Southern Bank and announced he was robbing it, according to a Cape Girardeau Police Department news release. The release said Bann told a witness to place their money in an envelope and did not say how much.

“The witness placed a $20.00 bill in an envelope and handed it to Bann. Bann then exited the business and waited near the front door for officers to arrive,” the release stated.

The officers found Bann “sitting on a walker”, and the man told the officers he was expecting them, according to the release. The release said Bann allegedly said he robbed the bank and gave the envelope that contained $20 to the officer.

“Bann told the officer he wanted to go to prison so he could get medical attention,” the release stated. “There was no weapons displayed by Bann and no weapons were located.”

According to the release, Bann is being held on a $50,000 bond.
