The “Back to School Bash” is set to take place Thursday, Aug. 15. Organized through a collaboration between Cape G Rocks, Historic Park Porch Sessions, the Discovery Playhouse and Scout Hall, the event promises an evening filled with music, games and community spirit.

The event will feature a street closure between the Discovery Playhouse and Scout Hall, creating a safe space for attendees to get to the food, drink and other vendors.

The musical lineup includes performances by Double Take and Evan Webb at the outdoor stage behind the Discovery Playhouse, and Brit Taylor at the outdoor stage at Scout Hall.

Shawn Wood, founder of Cape G Rocks, said this event is family friendly.

Families can look forward to a variety of outdoor games, organized by the Discovery Playhouse, including cornhole and other outside activities. Wood said this event aims to raise awareness about community resources such as the Discovery Playhouse and Scout Hall.

“Some people still say, ‘I didn't know Scout Hall had an outdoor stage.’ Well, they do. They have an excellent, great outdoor stage. There may be people who came to this but didn't realize that. Also the same for Discovery Playhouse, we want to get the community involved.” Wood said. “We want to provide a fun, different type of event for families to get out and go to attend together, while also exploring Discovery Playhouse and Scout Hall. Just realize, ‘Wow, look what our community has to offer. We have so many great things here downtown.’”

Double Take, a band of the Stinnett brothers — Will and Wyatt — from Portageville, will take the Discovery Playhouse stage first at 5:45 p.m. This band's musical style is a blend of blues, country, and rock ’n’ roll. The twins draw inspiration from iconic bands such as the Beatles and Chris Stapleton.

The Evan Webb Band will take the stage at 6:30 p.m. This band plays original rural music and is a local favorite among the Cape G Rocks sessions and has done multiple Scout Sessions.

The headliner, Brit Taylor, is a country singer/ songwriter out of Kentucky. Taylor is swiftly gaining recognition for her steadfast commitment to tradition, combined with modern, candid and relatable lyrics, as well as her sultry yet powerful alto voice.

In her breakout year, Taylor has achieved significant milestones, including her debut performance at the Grand Ole Opry and the release of her second album, “Kentucky Blue”, produced by Sturgill Simpson. The album debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Bluegrass Albums chart and remained in the Top 20 on the Americana chart for several weeks, according to the Scout Hall website.

When success did not come easily for Brit Taylor, she earned it through sheer determination. Her music and story are a testament to hard work, challenging times, unwavering conviction and profound self-reflection.

Starting her journey at just 7 years old on the Kentucky Opry, Taylor left home at 17 to pursue her dream of a country music career in Nashville. She earned a college degree and landed her first publishing deal through an internship.

However, her path was not without obstacles. Taylor faced a failed marriage, the loss of a beloved dog, the dissolution of her band and publishing deal and the threat of losing her cherished mini-farm, a sanctuary that provides her peace and houses her collection of animals.

Despite these setbacks, her resilience shines through, offering listeners relatable and empathetic experiences. Her music provides both a backdrop for joy and a comforting shoulder for sorrow.

Like the Kentucky tulip poplar trees, deeply rooted in mountain soils yet reaching skyward, Brit Taylor stands tall and unwavering. She sways with life's winds but never breaks.
