Cape Girardeau Public Library has received an $810 grant from the Community Foundation of the Ozarks. The grant will fund bird-watching and educational initiatives aimed at connecting young patrons with the natural world.

The grant will be used to purchase bird feeders and viewing stations, including a live stream setup that will allow children to watch up-close bird feedings on iPads in the Youth Services area. The library will also expand its collection to include bird identification books specifically designed for children.

“Our goal is to create meaningful, engaging experiences for children that spark curiosity about the world around them,” said Alli Boyer, youth services coordinator at the Cape Girardeau Public Library. “These programs not only encourage a love for nature but also provide a fun and interactive way for kids to learn and explore.”

The library plans to host a series of birdhouse decorating programs in February, coinciding with the annual bird-watching movement across America. These programs will offer hands-on, creative experiences for children and families, fostering a deeper appreciation for bird life in the region.

The bird feeders will be installed this fall, creating a welcoming space for local bird species and providing an engaging activity for young library visitors. Library staff are grateful to the Community Foundation of the Ozarks for making these programs possible.
